§ 12474 State Employee Payroll Roster

Key Takeaways

  • •The state keeps a list of all workers in state agencies (except the University of California).
  • •This list includes regular workers but not temporary or emergency hires.
  • •Changes to the list (like adding or removing someone) can be done online if the Controller agrees.
  • •The online update is the official record for paying workers or other actions.

Example

A new teacher gets hired at a state school.

The school must add the teacher’s name to the state’s payroll list. If they do it online and the Controller approves, that’s enough to start paying the teacher.
