§ 12468 County Property Tax Audit Schedule

Key Takeaways

  • •Big counties (over 5 million people) get checked every year to make sure they split property tax money fairly.
  • •Medium counties (between 200,000 and 5 million people) get checked every 3 years.
  • •Small counties (under 200,000 people) get checked every 5 years.
  • •The person in charge can check medium and small counties more often if they want.
  • •Every year, a report is sent to the government about what was found in the checks and how to fix any mistakes.

Example

Los Angeles County has over 5 million people, so it gets checked every year to make sure property tax money is shared correctly between schools, cities, and other services.

The law says big counties like Los Angeles must be audited annually to ensure property tax money is divided fairly. If they find mistakes, they tell the government how to fix them.
