§ 12176 Secretary Of State Fees

Key Takeaways

  • •All fees collected by the Secretary of State from different codes (like business or civil laws) go into a special fund called the 'Secretary of State’s Business Fees Fund'.
  • •The money in this fund is used to pay for the programs that collect these fees.
  • •If there’s more money than needed, up to $1 million can stay in the fund, and the rest goes to the General Fund at the end of the year.
  • •The Secretary of State must send all collected fees to the State Treasury at least once a week.

Example

If you start a new business and pay a fee to register it with the state, that fee goes into the Secretary of State’s Business Fees Fund.

The money you paid helps run the programs that handle business registrations. If there’s extra money left at the end of the year, most of it goes to the General Fund, but up to $1 million can stay in the fund for next year.
