§ 644 Conservator Trust Fund Handling

Key Takeaways

  • •If a company is in trouble and gets a conservator (someone to help fix it), new money or deposits from customers must be kept safe and separate.
  • •This new money cannot be used to pay off the company's old debts or bills.
  • •The money must be kept as cash, invested in safe government things, or put in a Federal Reserve Bank.

Example

Imagine a bank is having money problems, and the government sends someone to help fix it. While the bank is being fixed, you deposit $100 into your account.

Your $100 must be kept safe and separate. The bank cannot use your $100 to pay off its old debts. Your money will be kept as cash or invested in safe places like government bonds.
