§ 16100 Foreign Credit Union Activities

A credit union from another state that gets a license to have a branch in California can only do the things that both its home state and California law say it can do.

Key Takeaways

  • •The foreign credit union must have a California license to operate a branch.
  • •It must follow the rules of its home state and the rules that apply to California credit unions.
  • •It cannot do anything that its home state forbids or that California credit unions are not allowed to do.

Example

A credit union based in Nevada opens a branch in Los Angeles after getting a California license.

The Nevada credit union can offer checking accounts and loans in California only if Nevada law allows those services and California law also allows them for credit unions. If Nevada law bans payday loans, or if California credit unions aren’t allowed to do payday loans, the Nevada credit union can’t offer them at its California branch.
