§ 14803 Credit Union Membership Incentives

This law says credit unions can't pay people just for bringing in new members or getting existing members to deposit more money, unless they follow specific rules.

Key Takeaways

  • •Credit unions can't pay people just for bringing in new members or getting more deposits, unless they follow the rules.
  • •They can give small rewards (like gift cards) if their board approves it.
  • •Credit unions can still use member growth to decide employee bonuses.

Example

A credit union offers a $50 gift card to someone who refers a friend to join.

This is allowed only if the credit union's board approves it and the reward is reasonable.
