§ 8693 Gill Net Fishing Restrictions

Key Takeaways

  • •You can use certain types of nets (drift gill nets and set gill nets) to catch fish in specific areas (Districts 17, 18, 19, and 20A), but not for catching salmon.
  • •There are special rules for catching rockfish and lingcod, like where you can fish and how big the net holes must be.
  • •In some places, you can't fish in water that's too shallow, and the nets can't be made of thick twine.
  • •You can only keep a small amount of rockfish and lingcod together (200 pounds total, with no more than 100 pounds of rockfish).

Example

A fisherman wants to catch rockfish and lingcod using a gill net in District 18.

The fisherman must make sure the net holes are at least 5.5 inches big if fishing near Pigeon Point Lighthouse. Also, they can't fish in water less than 40 fathoms deep in some areas. If they catch rockfish and lingcod, they can only keep up to 200 pounds total, with no more than 100 pounds of rockfish.
