§ 8623 Purse Seine Net Restrictions

Key Takeaways

  • •You can't use big nets called purse seine or round haul nets to catch yellowtail, barracuda, or white sea bass.
  • •If you have these fish on your boat, they must be caught in Mexico and brought in following special rules. You can't have them if your boat has those big nets.
  • •You can use gill nets with small holes (3.5 inches) to catch yellowtail and barracuda.
  • •For white sea bass, you can use gill nets with bigger holes (6 inches). But from June 16 to March 14, you can only have up to 20% of your catch as big white sea bass (28 inches or longer), and no more than 10 of them.

Example

A fisherman wants to catch yellowtail to sell at the market.

He can't use a big round haul net to catch them. Instead, he must use a gill net with holes at least 3.5 inches wide. If he uses the wrong net, he could get in trouble.
