§ 8282 Rock Crab Size Limits

Key Takeaways

  • •You can catch rock crabs in traps in most California waters, but not in Districts 9, 19A, 19B, 21, or the north/east sides of Santa Catalina Island.
  • •Rock crabs must be at least 4.25 inches wide (measured straight across the shell) to keep, sell, or buy. Smaller ones must be thrown back.
  • •If you catch rock crabs, you must carry a ruler or measuring tool and check each crab right after pulling it from the trap.
  • •The state can make new rules for rock crab fishing if needed, after a public meeting.

Example

You go crabbing off the coast of Santa Barbara and pull up a trap with 10 rock crabs.

You must measure each crab right away. If 3 crabs are 4 inches wide and 7 are 4.5 inches wide, you have to throw the 3 small ones back into the water. You can only keep the 7 bigger ones.
