§ 5981 Fish Conduit Screening Costs

Key Takeaways

  • •The government checks all pipes or tunnels that carry water. If they think fish might swim into them, they can tell the owner to put a screen to block the fish.
  • •The owner of the pipe or tunnel has to pay for half of the screen, and the government pays the other half.
  • •There are some special cases where this rule might not apply, but usually, the cost is split 50-50.

Example

A farmer has a big pipe that takes water from a river to water his crops. The government checks the pipe and sees that fish from the river could swim into it and get stuck or hurt.

The government tells the farmer to put a screen on the pipe to stop the fish. The farmer has to pay for half of the screen, and the government pays the other half.
