§ 15105 Aquaculture Program Funding Rules

All money the department collects for its aquaculture program must go into a special fund and can only be spent on that program, with the department keeping track and reporting on it regularly.

Key Takeaways

  • •All aquaculture fees and taxes go into the Fish and Game Preservation Fund and can only be used for the aquaculture program.
  • •The Legislature can include these funds in the yearly budget, but they still must be spent only on aquaculture.
  • •The department must track spending, answer accounting requests, and submit a detailed report every five years (first due by Feb 1, 2022) to check that fees cover program costs.

Example

A fish farm pays a fee to the state for a permit to raise salmon.

The fee is put into the Fish and Game Preservation Fund and is only used to pay for things like inspections, research, and other costs of the state's aquaculture program. The department records how the money is spent and later reports to the legislature about the program and whether the fees are enough.
