§ 9004 Stepparent Adoption Inheritance Notice

Key Takeaways

  • •If a birth parent gives their child up for adoption to a stepparent, the child can still inherit from the birth parent.
  • •The child can also inherit from other blood relatives, like grandparents or siblings.
  • •This only applies if the birth parent and child lived together at some point.

Example

A mom lets her new husband adopt her kid from a previous relationship. They all lived together before the adoption.

Even after the stepparent adopts the kid, the kid can still inherit money or property from the mom and her family if she passes away.
