§ 7133 Emancipation Notice Requirements

Key Takeaways

  • •Parents or guardians must be told before a court decides if a kid can be emancipated (live like an adult).
  • •If the emancipation is canceled, parents might have to support the kid again, like paying for food or doctor visits.
  • •Parents don’t have to pay or help if they weren’t properly told about the court’s decision.

Example

A 16-year-old wants to be emancipated so they can move out and work full-time.

The court must tell the kid’s parents about the hearing. If the court later says the emancipation is canceled, the parents might have to start supporting the kid again, like paying for their groceries or health insurance. But if the parents weren’t told about the hearing, they don’t have to pay until they’re officially notified.
