§ 3162 Child Custody Mediation Standards

This law says that when parents argue about who gets to take care of their kids or when they can visit, they have to follow special rules to make sure the kids are happy and safe.

Key Takeaways

  • •The main goal is to do what's best for the kids.
  • •Kids should get to see both parents often, unless it's not safe.
  • •The mediator makes sure both parents have an equal say, even if one is louder or more powerful.
  • •Mediators get special training to help families make fair plans.

Example

Mom and Dad are divorced and can't agree on who gets to have their son, Jake, for Christmas.

A special person called a mediator will help them talk and make a fair plan. The mediator makes sure Jake gets to see both parents and that no one is treated unfairly.
