§ 8551 District Powers And Authority

Key Takeaways

  • •The district can sue or be sued in court like a person.
  • •The district can buy, sell, or use property (like land or tools) to do its job.
  • •The district can make rules to charge people money to pay for its work.
  • •The district can hire people or companies to help with its work and pay them what it thinks is fair.
  • •The district can go onto any land in its area to check and treat citrus trees to stop bugs or diseases.

Example

If the district finds out that a farmer’s citrus trees have a bad bug that could spread to other farms, the district can go onto that farm to check the trees and spray them to kill the bugs.

The law lets the district enter private land to inspect and treat trees to stop pests from spreading. The farmer can’t stop them because it’s the district’s job to protect all the citrus trees in the area.
