§ 79152 Spiny Lobster Fishery Management

Key Takeaways

  • •The law helps keep the spiny lobster population healthy in California.
  • •It supports research to learn more about lobsters and how to protect them.
  • •A special group (commission) will make sure fishing rules are fair and smart.
  • •This helps fishermen and makes sure lobsters don’t disappear.

Example

A fisherman catches too many small lobsters before they can grow big.

The commission can make rules to stop this, like setting a size limit, so lobsters have time to grow and reproduce. This keeps the lobster population strong for the future.

§ 79152 Spiny Lobster Fishery Management

The successes that the spiny lobster fishery in California has enjoyed have come in large part through a commitment by the industry to support appropriate management regulations guiding the harvesting of spiny lobster and to fund research into resource assessment and enhancement methodology that has led to significant improvements in understanding the biology of the spiny lobster resource. The establishment of a commission will continue and enhance this research effort and the ability of the industry to promote responsible fishery management regulations, all of which will move the industry toward a sustainable position, resulting in increased consumer value and enhanced economic returns. (Added by Stats. 2017, Ch. 503, Sec. 1. (AB 944) Effective January 1, 2018. Provisions operative or inoperative as prescribed in Sections 79180.5, 79181.5, and 79195 et. seq. Repealed conditionally pursuant to Section 79182.5.)
