§ 76112 Cherry Producer Referendum Rules

Key Takeaways

  • •This law only starts working if enough cherry farmers vote 'yes' in a special vote.
  • •At least 40% of all cherry farmers must join the vote.
  • •Either 65% of voters say 'yes' AND those voters sold more than half of all cherries last year, OR most voters say 'yes' AND those voters sold at least 65% of all cherries last year.

Example

Imagine 100 cherry farmers in California. Only 50 of them vote in a special vote about new rules for selling cherries.

The new rules only start if at least 40 farmers vote. Then, either 65% of those 50 voters (33 farmers) say 'yes' AND those 33 sold more than half of all cherries last year, OR more than half of the 50 voters (26 farmers) say 'yes' AND those 26 sold at least 65% of all cherries last year.
