§ 73261 Late Assessment Penalties

• •If you're a producer or handler and don't file your return or pay your assessment on time, you'll have to pay extra.
• •The extra money you owe is 10% of the assessment you didn't pay on time.
• •You also have to pay 2% more every month on the money you still owe.

A farmer is supposed to pay a $1,000 assessment by a certain date but forgets to pay on time.

The farmer will have to pay an extra $100 (10% of $1,000) as a penalty. Plus, every month the $1,000 isn't paid, the farmer owes an extra 2% of the remaining amount.
