§ 61872 Nonprofit Cooperative Milk Handlers

Key Takeaways

  • •A nonprofit group that helps farmers sell milk is called a 'handler' in certain situations.
  • •If the group gets milk from someone who isn’t a farmer they work with, they’re a handler.
  • •If the group processes milk (like pasteurizing or bottling it), they’re a handler.
  • •If the group sells or delivers packaged milk, they’re a handler.

Example

A local dairy cooperative gets milk from a farm they don’t usually work with and bottles it to sell in stores.

Because the cooperative took milk from a non-member farm and packaged it, they are considered a 'handler' under this law.
