§ 5951 Sterile Fruit Fly Production

Key Takeaways

  • •Mexican fruit flies are bad for California's money and crops.
  • •It's better to use other ways to kill bugs instead of spraying poison from planes over cities.
  • •Using sterile (can't have babies) flies is a good way to stop Mexican fruit flies without chemicals.
  • •California doesn't have enough sterile flies to fight future bug problems.

Example

A farmer finds Mexican fruit flies in their orange grove.

Instead of spraying poison from a plane, the farmer can release sterile flies to stop the bugs from having babies and spreading. This helps save the oranges without hurting people in nearby towns.

(c) The use of sterile flies has proven to be one of the most effective nonchemical procedures in the successful control and eradication of Mexican fruit flies. (d) California does not have a reliable source of sterile Mexican fruit flies that may be used to control future infestations of this pest. (e) The federal government, other states, the agricultural industry, and the country of Mexico would all benefit from a reliable source of sterile Mexican fruit flies.
