§ 35751 Vitamin Fortified Milk Standards

Key Takeaways

  • •You can add vitamins and minerals to milk, but you must say so on the label.
  • •You have to tell the government how you add the vitamins and get their okay.
  • •The milk with added vitamins must still be as good as regular milk.
  • •If you add vitamin D, each quart must have 400 units of it. If you add vitamin A, each quart must have at least 2,000 units.

Example

A dairy company wants to sell milk with extra vitamin D.

The company must write on the milk carton that vitamin D was added. They also have to tell the government how they added it and make sure each quart has 400 units of vitamin D. If they don’t do this, they can’t sell the milk.
