§ 34006 Milk Byproduct Pasteurization Requirements

Key Takeaways

  • •If you run a place that handles milk or milk byproducts (like skim milk or whey) for animal feed, you must pasteurize it before giving it to animals.
  • •Pasteurizing means heating the milk to either 145°F for 30 minutes or 185°F right away.
  • •This rule is to make sure the milk is safe for animals to eat.

Example

A farmer gets skim milk from a dairy to feed to their pigs.

The dairy must heat the skim milk to 145°F for 30 minutes or 185°F quickly before giving it to the farmer. If they don’t, they’re breaking the law.
