§ 19342 Dead Animal Handling Rules

Key Takeaways

  • •Slaughterhouses can't take dead animals unless they died while being transported.
  • •Dead animals must go straight to a special place (rendering establishment) that handles them.
  • •If an animal dies right when it arrives because it got hurt during the trip, it can be slaughtered right away under special rules.

Example

A farmer is transporting cows to a slaughterhouse, and one cow dies on the way because it got hurt.

The slaughterhouse can slaughter that cow right away if they follow special rules, but they can't take any other dead cows unless they send them to a special place for dead animals.
