§ 16522 Animal Ownership Evidence

• •A registered brand on the animal or hide works as proof of ownership.
• •A brand inspection certificate or a bill of sale can also be used.
• •If the animal isn’t branded, a detailed bill of sale describing the animal can prove ownership.
• •A dairy exemption number is another accepted proof.

A rancher wants to prove a cow belongs to him after a dispute with a neighbor.

If the cow has a brand that’s registered to the rancher, or the rancher has a brand inspection paper, a bill of sale, a detailed description for an unbranded cow, or a dairy exemption number, any of those can be used to show the cow is his.
