§ 14643 Substance Component Analysis Rules

This law says that whenever you need to figure out what percent of a substance is made up of each ingredient, you must use the testing method that the secretary decides on.

Key Takeaways

  • •All percentage tests must follow the method the secretary picks.
  • •The rule applies whenever a label, registration, or claim needs a percent number.
  • •Using the approved method helps make sure the numbers on labels are correct.

Example

A company wants to put a label on a cleaning spray that says it is 30% ethanol.

The company has to test the spray using the secretary‑approved method to make sure the ethanol really makes up 30% of the whole mixture before they can label it that way.

How to Calculate

Percentage of component = (Amount of component ÷ Total amount of substance) × 100

  1. Measure how much of the specific ingredient is in the sample (using the secretary‑approved method).
  2. Measure the total amount of the whole sample.
  3. Divide the ingredient amount by the total amount.
  4. Multiply the result by 100 to get a percent.

A bottle contains 15 grams of fragrance oil in a total of 50 grams of perfume.

Result: Percentage = (15 ÷ 50) × 100 = 0.30 × 100 = 30% of the perfume is fragrance oil.
