§ 13185 School Pest Management Training

This law requires the state department to create a pest‑control training program for schools, using a ‘train‑the‑trainer’ method and working with universities, while still allowing schools to set stricter pesticide rules if they choose.

Key Takeaways

  • •The department must set up an integrated pest management (IPM) training program for schools.
  • •Training should use a “train‑the‑trainer” approach and involve California universities.
  • •Outreach starts regionally, then moves to individual school districts, and can include child‑care centers.
  • •Schools are still allowed to adopt stricter pesticide policies than the state program.

Example

A school district wants its teachers to learn safer ways to handle bugs in classrooms.

The department will set up a training program, partner with a university to create the lessons, and then train a few teachers who will teach the rest of the staff, and the district can still add tougher rules if it wants.

§ 13185 School Pest Management Training

(a) The department shall establish an integrated pest management training program in order to facilitate the adoption of a model IPM program and least-hazardous pest control practices by schoolsites. In establishing the IPM training program, the department shall do all of the following: (1) Adopt a “train-the-trainer” approach, whenever feasible, to rapidly and broadly disseminate program information. (2) Develop curricula and promote ongoing training efforts in cooperation with the University of California and the California State University. (3) Prioritize outreach on a regional basis first and then to school districts. For outreach to child day care facilities, the department shall participate in existing trainings that provide opportunities for disseminating program information broadly on a regional basis. (b) Nothing in this article shall preclude a schoolsite from adopting stricter pesticide use policies. (Amended by Stats. 2006, Ch. 865, Sec. 5. Effective January 1, 2007.)
