§ 10791 Swine Identification Requirements

This law says anyone who owns a domestic pig that shows two specific traits must put a permanent mark like a brand or tattoo on the pig, and the mark has to be approved by the department.

Key Takeaways

  • •The department will write the detailed rules for how the marking must be done.
  • •The mark has to be permanent (like a brand, tattoo, or other visible validation).
  • •The law only applies to pigs that have two or more of the listed traits.
  • •It starts working on July 1 2024.

Example

A farmer has a pig that is both black‑spotted and has a curly tail, which are two of the traits listed in the fish and game rules.

Because the pig has two of those traits, the farmer must get an approved brand or tattoo from the department and put it on the pig before July 1 2024.
