§ 10786 Animal Regulation Penalties

This law lets the department fine up to $100 for each animal when someone breaks a rule, and it also says that breaking the rule on purpose can be a crime with its own fine.

Key Takeaways

  • •The department can fine up to $100 for each animal that breaks a rule.
  • •A written notice in plain English must be sent to the person who broke the rule.
  • •If the violation was done on purpose, the person can also face criminal charges, not just the fine.

Example

A pet owner has three cats and lets them roam free in a public park, which is against the local animal rule.

The department can send a notice and charge the owner $100 for each cat, so the owner would owe $300. If the owner did it on purpose, they could also be charged as a crime.

How to Calculate

Penalty = $100 × Number of individual animals

  1. Count how many animals are involved in the violation.
  2. Multiply that number by $100.
  3. The result is the total fine the department can charge.

A farmer has 7 goats that were not kept according to the rule.

Result: $700 total penalty (7 × $100 = $700)
