§ 9341 Local Revenue Bond Referendum

Key Takeaways

  • •If a school or local group wants to borrow money together with others, they have to wait 60 days before they can do it.
  • •If lots of people (more than 500,000) voted in the last big election in that area, then 5% of those voters can sign a paper to stop the borrowing plan and make everyone vote on it.
  • •If fewer people (less than 500,000) voted in the last big election, then 10% of those voters can sign a paper to stop the borrowing plan and make everyone vote on it.
  • •If there’s a vote, the question on the ballot will say what the money is for and how it will be paid back.

Example

A small town’s school district wants to team up with nearby towns to borrow $10 million to build new schools. The town had 400,000 voters in the last big election.

The school district has to wait 60 days before borrowing the money. If 10% of the voters (40,000 people) sign a paper saying they don’t want this, then everyone in the town gets to vote on whether the schools can borrow the money. The vote will ask if the town should borrow $10 million for new schools and how they’ll pay it back.
