Key Takeaways

  • •If someone running for president changes their mind, they can tell the state they don’t want to run anymore.
  • •They have to do this at least 68 days before the big vote.
  • •If they do this on time, their name won’t be on the ballot.
  • •If they don’t do it on time, their name stays on the ballot even if they don’t want to run.

Example

Imagine a person named John says he wants to be president, but later decides he doesn’t want to run anymore.

John has to tell the state he’s quitting at least 68 days before the vote. If he does, his name won’t be on the ballot. If he waits too long, his name stays on the ballot even if he doesn’t want to be president.
