§ 19101 Voting System Standards

This law tells the Secretary of State to create and publish rules for voting machines that meet federal standards and are safe, secret, accessible, and reliable.

Key Takeaways

  • •Voting machines must meet federal Help America Vote Act standards.
  • •Machines must keep ballots secret and be safe from fraud.
  • •Machines must work for people with disabilities and for voters needing language assistance.
  • •The Secretary of State can add extra testing if needed.

Example

A county wants to buy new electronic voting machines for the upcoming election.

The Secretary of State must first adopt standards that make sure the machines are suitable, keep ballots secret, prevent fraud, work for people with disabilities, and provide help in other languages if needed. The county can only use machines that meet these rules.
