§ 18600 Petition Signature Misrepresentation

It is a misdemeanor to lie or trick people while collecting signatures for a ballot measure or referendum.

Key Takeaways

  • •You cannot make false claims about what a petition says or does.
  • •You cannot hide that you are being paid to collect signatures.
  • •Breaking these rules can result in a misdemeanor charge.

Example

A campaign pays people to gather signatures but tells them they are volunteers and hides the payment, or tells signers the measure does something different from what it actually does.

Doing that is illegal because the law forbids false statements about the petition’s content or about whether the signer is being paid.
