§ 18200 Nomination Petition Fraud

This law says it's a serious crime to sign a nomination petition with a made‑up name, to sign someone else's name, or to get someone else to use a fake name.

Key Takeaways

  • •Don’t use a made‑up name on any nomination petition.
  • •Don’t sign another person’s name on a nomination petition.
  • •Don’t get anyone else to sign a petition with a fake name.
  • •Doing any of these is a felony and can lead to 16 months‑3 years in prison.

Example

Jane fills out a petition to get someone on the city council, but she writes "John Doe" as her name even though she isn’t John, and she also asks her friend to sign the same fake name for another spot.

Because Jane used a fake name and got her friend to do the same, she could be sent to prison for 16 months to three years under this law.
