§ 18110 Voter Privacy For Officers

This law makes it illegal to share the street address or phone number from a voter registration card of a police officer, sheriff employee, or their family members; doing so is a misdemeanor, and if it leads to someone getting hurt it becomes a felony.

Key Takeaways

  • •“Home address” only means the street address, not the city or post office.
  • •Police officers, sheriff’s employees, and their spouses or kids who live with them cannot share the address or phone number from a voter registration card.
  • •Sharing that info is a misdemeanor, but if it causes bodily injury it becomes a felony.

Example

A city police officer’s spouse copies the officer’s home street address from the voter registration card and posts it on a social media site.

Because the address is from a voter registration card and the person is a police officer’s family member, sharing it breaks the law. The spouse could be charged with a misdemeanor, and if someone is injured because of the posted address, the charge could be upgraded to a felony.
