§ 15653 Tied Governor Election Procedure

This law says that if two or more people get the same highest number of votes for Governor or Lieutenant Governor, the Secretary of State gives each of them a certificate. Then, each of them can show this certificate to the Legislature however they want.

Key Takeaways

  • •If there's a tie for the most votes in a Governor or Lieutenant Governor race, the tied candidates get a certificate.
  • •Each tied candidate can show their certificate to the Legislature in their own way.
  • •This only happens when two or more people have the exact same highest number of votes.

Example

Imagine two people, Alex and Jamie, both get 500,000 votes for Governor, and no one else gets more than that.

The Secretary of State will give both Alex and Jamie a certificate saying they tied. Then, Alex and Jamie can each go to the Legislature and show their certificate however they choose.
