§ 15301 Election Canvass Timeline

This law says the official vote count must start by the Thursday after an election, be open for anyone to watch, and for state elections the results must be sent to the Secretary of State. The counting keeps going every weekday (but not on weekends or holidays) for at least six hours each day until it’s finished.

Key Takeaways

  • •Counting must start no later than the Thursday after the election.
  • •The counting process must be open for the public to see.
  • •For state or statewide elections, the final results must be reported to the Secretary of State.
  • •Counting continues each weekday (no Saturdays, Sundays, or holidays) for at least six hours per day until all votes are counted.

Example

After a statewide governor election, the officials begin counting votes on Thursday, let the public watch the process, and keep counting each weekday for at least six hours until every ballot is tallied. Then they send the final numbers to the Secretary of State.

The law makes sure the count starts quickly, is transparent, runs every workday for enough time, and ends with an official report to the state’s top election officer.
