§ 13282 Ballot Title Public Review

This law says the Attorney General must give the Secretary of State a short title and summary of any ballot measure, and the Secretary must let the public look at it for at least 20 days before the ballot is printed.

Key Takeaways

  • •The Attorney General must file a condensed ballot title and summary with the Secretary of State.
  • •The Secretary of State must make the title and summary available for public review for at least 20 days before ballots are printed.
  • •Voters can ask a court to change or delete any part of the title or summary they think is wrong.

Example

A new school funding measure is being put on the ballot. The Attorney General sends a short title and summary to the Secretary of State, and the Secretary posts it online for everyone to read for 20 days before the ballots are printed.

People can read the short description during those 20 days, and if someone thinks the description is wrong, they can ask a court to change or remove it.
