§ 1303 Special District Election Dates

This law says special districts must hold elections for their board members on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November of every odd-numbered year, unless they choose to hold them on the same day as the statewide general election.

Key Takeaways

  • •Elections are normally on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November of odd-numbered years.
  • •A district can decide to hold elections on the same day as the statewide election if the board passes a resolution.
  • •The resolution only works after the board of supervisors approves it.

Example

A small fire protection district needs to elect new board members in 2025.

Because the district hasn't passed a special rule, it will hold its election on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November 2025 (which is November 4, 2025).
