§ 10603 School Board Candidate Filing

This law tells people who want to run for a school board or community college board when and how to put their name on the ballot, and it limits how many different district jobs they can run for at the same time.

Key Takeaways

  • •You must file a signed declaration of candidacy 88‑113 days before the election to get on the ballot.
  • •Once you’ve filed, you can’t withdraw after the 88‑day mark.
  • •You can only file for one district office in the same election, unless a new unified school district is also on the ballot.

Example

Maria wants to run for her local elementary school board. She files her paperwork 100 days before the election, but then decides she doesn’t want to run anymore.

Because she filed her paperwork between 88 and 113 days before the vote, the law says her name stays on the ballot and she can’t pull out after the 88‑day deadline.
