§ 10200 Election Validity Standards

This law says courts should read election rules loosely to help their purpose, and small mistakes won’t cancel an election if most of the rules were followed.

Key Takeaways

  • •Courts should interpret election rules in a flexible way to achieve the law’s goals.
  • •Minor errors, omissions, or irregularities won’t invalidate an election if there is substantial compliance.
  • •The purpose is to keep elections valid even when small mistakes happen.

Example

A voting place forgets to post a required sign for a short time, but all other voting steps are done correctly.

Because the election still followed the main rules, the missing sign is just a small error and the election stays valid.
