§ 99002 California Compact Commissioners

Key Takeaways

  • •California picks 3 people (called commissioners) to work on a special team with other states.
  • •The Governor chooses them, but the Senate has to agree.
  • •They stay in the job for 4 years, but can be kicked out if they do something really bad.
  • •If one leaves early, the Governor picks someone new to finish their time.

Example

Imagine your school picks 3 kids to be on a team with other schools.

The principal (like the Governor) picks them, but the teachers (like the Senate) have to say it’s okay. If one kid moves away, the principal picks a new kid to take their spot.

The term of any commissioner who ceases to hold the required qualifications shall terminate when a successor may be duly appointed. Vacancies occurring in the office of a commissioner from any reason or cause shall be filled for the unexpired term in the same manner as for a full term appointment.
