§ 8489 Childcare Program Expulsion Definitions

Key Takeaways

  • •Expulsion means a child is kicked out of a preschool or daycare program forever because of their behavior.
  • •Suspension means a child is temporarily not allowed to go to the program for one or more days because of their behavior.
  • •Persistent and serious behaviors are bad actions that keep happening, like hitting others, breaking things, or hurting themselves, and don't stop even when teachers try to help.
  • •These rules apply to state-funded preschools and family daycare homes in California for kids aged 0 to 5.

Example

A 4-year-old kid in preschool keeps hitting other kids and breaking toys, even after the teachers talk to them and try to help them behave.

If the kid keeps doing this, the preschool might suspend them for a few days or even expel them forever because these are 'persistent and serious behaviors' that make it hard for other kids to learn.
