§ 76403 Community College Disease Prevention

Key Takeaways

  • •Community colleges must work with local health officials to stop the spread of sickness among students.
  • •Nurses can give shots to students in school programs if a doctor gives the okay and sets the rules.
  • •The doctor doesn’t have to be there, but the nurse must know how to give shots safely and handle emergencies.
  • •Nurses must have the right medicine and tools to help if someone has a bad reaction to a shot.

Example

A community college sets up a flu shot clinic for students.

The college works with the local health department to plan the clinic. A nurse gives the flu shots following a doctor’s instructions. The nurse is trained to handle any bad reactions, like if a student gets very sick after the shot, and has the right medicine ready to help.
