§ 66024 Graduate Program Quality Review

Key Takeaways

  • •California wants its universities to keep improving their advanced degree programs (like master's and doctorate degrees).
  • •Universities must check their programs regularly to see if they are good, need changes, or should be stopped.
  • •California wants more teamwork between universities to create special doctorate programs together.
  • •New programs must be checked carefully to make sure they help students and the state.

Example

A university wants to start a new doctorate program in robotics.

The university must first check if the program is really needed and if it will help students and California. If it’s a good idea, they can team up with another university to make it happen faster.

§ 66024 Graduate Program Quality Review

The Legislature hereby affirms its commitment to the continuing quality and development of graduate and professional programs of the University of California, the California State University, and the independent institutions of higher education in this state. It is the intent of the Legislature that each governing board of an institution of higher education periodically review the quality of the graduate and professional programs operated by the institution, and the need to add, discontinue, or enhance graduate and professional programs, including programs leading to the joint doctorate degree. It is further the intent of the Legislature that the development of joint doctoral programs operated by the California State University and the University of California or one or more accredited independent institutions of higher education be established and expedited. All graduate and professional programs, including joint doctoral programs, are expected to undergo careful evaluation and be approved only when it has been demonstrated that these programs meet the needs of students and the state.
