§ 60045 Instructional Materials Standards

Key Takeaways

  • •School books must be correct, fair, and right for the kids' age.
  • •Books should not have bad grammar or spelling mistakes, except for stories or special books.
  • •The school board can say it's okay to break the grammar rule if it helps teaching.

Example

A school wants to use a new math book for 5th graders.

The book must have the right math facts, be easy for 5th graders to understand, and not have spelling mistakes. If the book has some slang words to help kids learn, the school board can say it's okay.
