§ 51932 Sex Education Exemptions

Key Takeaways

  • •This law does not apply to textbooks that show pictures or descriptions of human body parts related to reproduction, as long as the textbook doesn’t teach sex education or HIV prevention.
  • •This law also does not apply to lessons or materials that talk about things like gender, relationships, or family, as long as they don’t discuss how reproductive organs work.

Example

A school uses a science textbook that has a diagram of the human body, including reproductive organs, but the book doesn’t teach sex education.

The law says this textbook is okay because it only shows body parts without teaching sex education or HIV prevention.
