§ 51057 School Curriculum Exemption Requests

Key Takeaways

  • •Schools can ask the state to skip some usual class rules if they have a special plan to try new ways of teaching.
  • •The special plan must show why it’s better for students and how it will work.
  • •The school has to explain how they’ll test the new plan and tell the state how it’s going.
  • •The state can say yes for a few years and let the school keep doing it if it’s working well.

Example

A school wants to teach science by letting kids do hands-on experiments all day instead of reading textbooks.

The school can ask the state for permission to skip the normal science class rules. They have to explain why this hands-on way is better, how they’ll do it, and how they’ll check if kids are learning. If the state agrees, the school can try this new way for a few years.

The request for exemption shall include all of the following elements: (a) Rationale for the planned experimental curriculum project. (b) Objectives of the planned experimental curriculum project. (c) Plans for the administration and conduct of the planned experimental curriculum project, including the use of personnel, facilities, time, techniques, and activities.
