§ 49020 Equal High School Athletics

Key Takeaways

  • •Boys and girls in public high schools should have the same chances to play sports.
  • •The school might spend different amounts on boys' and girls' sports, but the opportunities should still be fair.
  • •If there isn't enough money, schools should find more ways to pay for equal sports programs.

Example

A high school has a football team for boys but no soccer team for girls.

The school should try to start a girls' soccer team so that girls have the same chance to play sports as boys. Even if soccer costs less than football, the school needs to make sure girls have fair opportunities.

§ 49020 Equal High School Athletics

It is the intent of the Legislature that opportunities for participation in interschool athletic programs in public high schools of the state be provided on as equal a basis as is practicable to male and female students. The costs of providing these equal opportunities may vary according to the type of sports contained within the respective male and female athletic programs. Additional sources of revenue should be determined to provide for these equal opportunity programs. (Enacted by Stats. 1976, Ch. 1010.)
