§ 48920 Expulsion Appeal Hearings

Key Takeaways

  • •If a student is expelled, they can ask the county board to look at their case again.
  • •The meeting about the expulsion is private unless the student asks for it to be public at least 5 days before.
  • •The board can talk about the case in private, even if the meeting is public.
  • •If the board lets someone from the student's side or the school's side in, they have to let the other side in too.

Example

A student named Alex gets expelled from school for bringing a weapon. Alex doesn't think it's fair and wants to tell the county board why.

Alex can ask the county board to review the expulsion. If Alex wants everyone to hear what happened, they must ask for a public meeting at least 5 days before. If Alex doesn't ask, the meeting will be private. The board can still talk privately about the case, but if they let Alex's parents in, they must also let someone from the school in.
