§ 43048 Lien Collection And Costs

Key Takeaways

  • •If someone owes special taxes to a school district, the school can wait up to 4 years after the last payment was due to collect the money.
  • •The school can take legal action to get the money if it's not paid.
  • •If the school wins in court, the person who owes money has to pay extra costs like lawyer fees and interest.
  • •The extra costs are added to the total amount owed and decided by the court.

Example

Imagine you own a house and you didn’t pay a special tax to the local school district for 5 years. The school district can take you to court to get the money.

The school can wait up to 4 years after the last tax was due to ask a court for help. If the court says you have to pay, you’ll also have to cover the school’s lawyer fees and extra charges on top of what you already owe.
